Relapse is the term applied when ex-smokers return to smoking. This is the important area that is often neglected in discussions of quitting cigarettes. The Two Components of Relapse
There are two main things that have to happen for there to be a relapse. First, there has to be a trigger, whether it’s a problem, an emotion, stress, a social crisis, or anything else. And second, your ability to cope or deal with this trigger has to be inadequate or unsatisfactory. To prevent relapse, either of these two conditions has to be eliminated or avoided. You know very well that you can’t simply avoid all triggers. That would be nice, but it just doesn’t happen. So the main focus of your efforts has to be to identify potential triggers and improve your coping ability for each and every one.
